Women’s History: Honoring the Past, Empowering the Future

Women Like You Quote

March is Women’s History Month, a time to reflect on the achievements, resilience, and contributions of women throughout history. As we also honor International Women’s Day on March 8th, I found a quote that deeply resonated with me: “Women like you pave the way for women like me. And for that, I am grateful.” This message perfectly captures the strength and solidarity that define our community.

The Fight Like a Girl community is built on shared experiences, mutual encouragement, and unwavering support. Even though we may not know each other personally, the courage, resilience, and determination that shine through every interaction remind us that we are never alone. Whether celebrating victories or facing challenges, we stand together, lifting each other up through every step of the journey.

The Power of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day began over a century ago, born from the labor movement and the fight for women’s rights. Since then, it has grown into a global day of recognition, celebrating the achievements of women and raising awareness of the work still to be done. Women’s History Month expands on this, offering us 31 days to reflect on the contributions of women who have broken barriers and paved the way in all areas of life—science, politics, arts, and even health and wellness.

But history isn’t just about the past. It’s about the now—and that’s where you come in. Every woman in the Fight Like a Girl community is making history by facing challenges head-on, advocating for better health outcomes, and refusing to be silenced by pain, illness, inequality, or injustice.

Your Stories Are Changing Lives

Through Fight Like a Girl and the bonds we’ve formed as FLAG sisters, we’ve created a space to talk about things often left unspoken—chronic pain, cancer battles, mental health struggles, autoimmune disorders, PTSD, and more. We bring awareness to women’s health issues and continue to rise together. Your stories don’t just stay within our community; they ripple out, inspiring other women to seek help, find their voices, and know they’re not alone.

I think of women like: a FLAG sister who shared her journey through breast cancer and is now part of our foundation’s Fight Pals program to help encourage current cancer fighters, or the women who opened up about their struggles with survivor guilt, helping countless others feel seen and heard. These are the stories that make Fight Like a Girl more than just a phrase—it’s a movement.

The Legacy of Sisterhood

There’s something profoundly beautiful about the way women lift each other up. The quote above reminds us that none of us stand alone. Every bit of progress we make, every challenge we overcome, and every story we share becomes a stepping stone for someone else.

I think about the women who have come before me—their sacrifices, their strength, their unwavering determination in the face of adversity. Some of them are trailblazers in history, women who fought for rights I now benefit from. Others are closer to home: mothers, sisters, grandmothers, friends, aunts, coaches, or mentors. Women who have faced illness with courage, who have fought through pain and injustice, who have refused to be silenced. Their resilience becomes a light for those of us who follow, showing us that even in the darkest moments, we are never truly alone.

And now, it’s our turn. Whether we realize it or not, we are paving the way for others through our actions, our words, and even our struggles. Every time we speak up, support another woman, share our experiences, or simply keep going despite life’s hardships, we are helping to encourage the next woman to do the same. Gratitude is not just about looking back—it’s about paying it forward. Because one day, someone will look at us and say, “Because of you, I kept going.” And that is the legacy of sisterhood.
