At the age of 26 you never think that breast cancer could ever apply to you. But it happened. It happened to me! A pain in my arm that continued to get worse forced me to go to the ER. An X-Ray showed a tumor in my arm. The doctors gave me a 50% chance of having cancer. More tests were ordered and the scans showed a spot in my breast. Soon after a biopsy was performed my worst nightmare was confirmed, I had breast cancer.
But what about my arm? Could that mean the breast cancer had metastasized? A very painful bone biopsy was performed and I heard the scariest words of my life, “You have stage 4 breast cancer.” How could this be? Why me? So many questions ran through my mind. I had a one year old, a career, and a loving boyfriend. I had to fight!
Surgery was performed to stabilize the bone in my arm and 25 rounds of radiation were performed. Eight rounds of chemotherapy, a lumpectomy, hair loss, depression, and uncertainty all made their way into my life. But prayer is a powerful tool! Today I show no evidence of disease in my body. I am a wife, a mother, and I am happy. I have a great family, amazing friends, and support from great people all over the world. I receive scans every three months. But I won’t give up. I’ll continue to FIGHT LIKE A GIRL!
