I was diagnosed with cervical cancer in August of 2013 at the age of 67. I had low dose chemo for six weeks and five weeks of external radiation followed by three doses of brachytherapy radiation (internal).
My tumor reacted very well to the treatment but I suffered from dehydration, compromised immune system, and kidney failure as a result of the combination treatment. After a week in the hospital on IVs, a bout of shingles, and four units of blood, I finally started recovering.
Last week I was declared cancer free! Yippee! What a nasty opponent! But thanks to my fight-like-a-girl mentality I got through it. Now I have several years of doctors visits, but that is easy enough to deal with.
