Tamaria’s Story (Thyroid Cancer)

Tamaria's Story Thyroid CancerMy 16-year-old daughter, Tamaria, was diagnosed with thyroid cancer last month. She has already undergone 2 surgeries. 1 was to remove the left portion of her thyroid when we thought the mass was a benign cyst. Then the pathology results came back, and she had a 2nd surgery to remove the thyroid completely. She goes back this week for scans to see if the cancer spread anywhere in her chest or lungs. This all started with a lump on her throat. Her primary care physician referred her to UVA hospital. Her doctor there ordered a fine needle biopsy, and that actually came back as non-cancerous. In a way, that 1st surgery may have saved her life. After the scans this week, she will have to prepare for a radioactive iodine, where she will be radioactive and will be isolated for about a week.
