Martha’s Story (Breast Cancer)

marthas-story-breast-cancerI was diagnosed Jan 11th. My right breast was a big rock, and so I went to the hospital. They said that it was extra tissue, which I knew it wasn’t, but because my insurance had expired, I couldn’t go again.

I finally got insurance and got a mammogram, and it didn’t show anything. But there clearly was something there, so they gave me an ultrasound and still didn’t see anything. I went to a breast surgeon and got a biopsy.

The day I found out, I was devastated. I was healthy, and I was 38-years-old. I started chemo February 3rd and finished June 1st. I had my surgery July 13th. I only had a single mastectomy. It was hard, but I got through it. Now, I’m going through radiation. That is draining me. I have to go every day, Monday through Friday, and the drive is horrible, but I know I have to do it, not just for me, but my kids. I have good days and I have bad days, and those bad days I just want to sleep, but I know I can’t. That is my story.
