Tiffanie's Story (Melanoma)

After a month of calling around to try and find a dermatologist, I decided I couldn’t wait any more. I contacted my general practitioner to at least have someone look at the mole that had seemed to change overnight. I knew there wasn’t much the GP could do, but I was hoping she could get me in to see a dermatologist. I went in thinking she was going to tell me that even though it looked angry, it would turn out to be nothing. The appointment went as planned. She looked at it and called a local dermatologist. I couldn’t get in to see the actual dermatologist but they could get me in to see a physician’s assistant. This was good enough for me! Finally, this scary mole would be looked at. Once at the dermatologist’s office, the PA agreed that the mole was extremely angry and needed to be removed immediately. He did a deep incision in order to get a really good sample for testing. The PA spoke to me about the possibilities but suggested I not jump automatically to melanoma. … [Read more...]

Black Ribbon Melanoma Stories

In October 1999, my first husband passed away (heart related).  He left behind 3 young children and his wife (me…in my 40’s).  In June of 2000, I went to the dermatologist, something I had needed to do because I had a mole on my neck that was dark, irregular in shape, bleeding and liquid coming out.  I covered it up with a big band aid. The reason I didn’t go right away was because, one, I was scared and, two, because the job I was at promised I would get health insurance. Well, to make a long story short, I never got the insurance but went to my dermatologist anyway. He called me on my birthday to tell me that I needed to have surgery ASAP to have this removed - that I had melanoma. I got set up with the surgeon, she removed the cancer, then I was to follow up with IL-2. I was giving myself shots daily, until a lump in my neck kept getting bigger.  Once again, the surgeon did a biopsy and it was melanoma in my lymph nodes. I was referred to MD Anderson of Orlando and from … [Read more...]

Melanoma Stories

Hello my name is Tiffany and I am writing because of the story that I just read of Carol. We find bumps and we think nothing of it. When I was 15 years old, I went to my foot doctor because I had a mole that would get caught on my sandles and it changed to a dark color. He took me in the OR and removed it. Within a couple of days I remember the phone ringing and my mother crying and them saying we have to get you back into the OR ASAP. I remember there being a team of doctors and they went in and removed as much as they could. They wanted to cut my foot off but my mother would not let them.  Years later, my bones were being eaten and that same team went in and took the bone out and graphed me a new one. Here I am, ten years and six bone graphs later and I wonder - Is the nightmare really over? You read that when you have malignant melanoma, you are prone to other cancers so when a bump comes up you are scared to have them look at you. I have four kids and scared to death that I … [Read more...]

Carol Anne's Story (Skin Cancer)

Write, he said. And so I did. I'm Carol Anne and I am pleased to be your new skin cancer writer. Beginning at the beginning, in October 2010 I walked into the emergency room with something that I believed was minor. A sore on my head had started to bleed. I woke up days later in ICU. I’d had two surgeries and had a breathing tube down my throat. The verdict was basal cell carcinoma that had invaded my skull and brain. I had a titanium plate in my head. I was still in the hospital recovering when my husband suggested that I write about my experience. I think at the time he wanted me to exercise my brain and my motor skills. I’ve been blogging for years and so it was a natural extension to write about my story. I started slow not knowing exactly what I wanted to share and what I wanted to hold back. I told the story of going to the ER, I told about waking up days later and not remembering the days in between, I shared my fears. As I collected myself and got my feet beneath me it … [Read more...]

Black Ribbon

I was 27 and I was going into the eye doctor for my yearly eye exam. During my check up my Dr told me that I had a detached retina and was concerned. I got a little nervous and he referred me to a retina specialist to check it out further.  A couple days later I went to the specialist. During the exam he took some pictures of my eye and what not then gave the news. You have cancer. I had a tumor that was 8 mm in size growing in my eye pushing on my retina and it was melanoma. What made it worse he said it could have came from somewhere else in my body or that it could just be in my eye. He then referred me the the Mayo Clinic. I had to wait a couple weeks to get into there so I was going crazy, and crying and wondering why it happened to me! And the news came just a short time before my 28th birthday.  When the time came to go the the Mayo Clinic we found out more news on the tumor. It was only in my eye thankfully, BUT melanoma has to be kept a clost eye on cuz … [Read more...]

Can Sunscreen Expire?: How Long Do They Last?

Does Sunscreen Expire (Melanoma)

The chemicals in sunscreens are usually pretty stable which means you can use last summer’s sunscreen as long as it’s not past the expiration date listed on the bottle. Unfortunately, not every sunscreen has an expiration date. To make sure you’re using a sunscreen that’s still up to snuff, look for one that has an expiration date clearly marked. Using expired sunscreen isn’t dangerous, but it could reduce the sun protection you’re getting. According to some experts, chemical sunscreens are still potent for up to three years, but to be safe it’s best to discard them before the expiration date - or within two years after purchase if the bottle has no expiration date. After all, sunscreen isn’t that expensive and the downsides of getting a sunburn from using expired sunscreen are too high. Keep in mind that a sunscreen bottle sets on the store shelf for a while before you purchase it, so be liberal with discarding it if there’s no expiration date and you can’t be … [Read more...]
