Mixed Connective Tissue Disease

My name is Yvonne. I am a 39-year-old mother of three beautiful children ages 21, 17, and 14. I can’t tell you how excited and sad I felt after finding this website. At first I thought I would just read some of the stories about mixed connective tissue disease just to see how others are dealing with this. I have never blogged my own personal tragedy to others, but I also have never felt like I do now. So here it goes… I have had to deal with this for 2 long years. I too was athletic, worked 12 hour shifts as a nurse, and loved doing things. One weekend in February 2010 my life was changing and at a rapid speed. It was my weekend to work. Normally it takes me about 5 minutes to park and walk to my floor - not this morning. It took me 25 minutes to walk to my floor. When I got to the floor all the nurses looked at me and told me how horrible I looked. Horrible! I was so short of breath, every possible joint in my body hurt, my ankles and legs looked like one (because of the … [Read more...]

A few ago months ago I was a beaming Bride-to-Be, planning day in and day out, trying to ignore the pain and swelling I was having in my hands. As the pain got worse, my fingers started changing colors, and the swelling reached a point where I couldn’t even get on my engagement ring.  I decided I should probably go see the doctor. My doctor kept saying that I probably just had a bad case of Raynaud’s (bad blood circulation to your hands and feet) but I just didn’t feel right. I was tired more than usual, losing hair, sleep, and my joints ached. My hands were excruciatingly painful, my thumb especially, it would lose all feeling, and I started getting severe tissue damage. I asked to see a specialist and my doctor finally agreed. The Rheumatologist took one look at me and knew it was more than Raynaud’s. After more blood tests than I can count, I was diagnosed with Multi Connective Tissue Disease (Scleroderma, Lupus, and Polymyositis all rolled into one disease - … [Read more...]

For 40 some odd years, I was a seriously healthy, strong chickadee. I did yoga, played tennis, skied. I was a soccer playing mom! When everyone else got the flu, I waded through the sea of germs tending to the sick with nary a scratch. My experience of being sick was 24 hours of R&R, in bed, with a good book! That all changed about two years ago. I got the bug going around my kids' school (Parvovirus). Everyone else got better, but I got worse. Then things got weird. I lost weight, my hands turned blue, and then puffed up like sausages. I couldn't tie my shoes or open a door or turn the key in the ignition. My kids (8 and 10) learned to cook because I couldn't hold a knife. I finally caved in and went to see a Rheumatologist. I didn't want to because a diagnosis from a Rheumatologist is for life. They treat the incurables. Long story short, I tested seriously positive for a rare autoimmune disease called MCTD. It's a hodgepodge of Lupus, RA, Scleroderma... … [Read more...]

Well, for about half my life, I had been feeling a lot of joint pain. It mostly started with my knees at first. I thought maybe I had just injured them in some way. As time progressed I began having knee and back pain. I got older and began to gain weight, so that was the go-to reason for my pain for everyone (doctors, friends, family). People told me if I would just lose weight, everything would get better. I knew this couldn't be the end all be all, sure my weight didn't help, but I just couldn't beleive my weight was the cause of everything. But I just went on with life. Well, recently (specifically almost right at the start of 2011), I began experiencing much more pain all at once. My back hurt, my wrists, knees, fingers, ankles, they all hurt. This wasn't just any hurt, this was rather debilitating pain. I needed help getting up, walking, sitting, and I couldn't even bend down or move far enough to lift the toilet lid for myself! Luckily, I had my fiance there to help me … [Read more...]
