I turned 41 in November of 2011. Like a responsible woman, I had my first "baseline" mammogram and a yearly physical in January. A week later, I got a letter in the mail, asking me to come back for a closer look at a "probably benign" finding.  My wise inner voice whispered "It’s OK. It’s cancer, but don’t be afraid." After a  second mammogram and a biopsy later, I wasn't surprised when my results came back tied with a big pink ribbon. The official diagnosis was coextensive DCIS. Although I had other options, I just didn't want to mess around. My grandmother had fought two battles. One at 43 and one at 53. She won both times, but lost both breasts, and because of her, I knew that my breasts did not define me, or my femininity. On April 23rd I had a bilateral mastectomy with immediate DIEP reconstruction. I was wheeled into surgery with cancer, and wheeled out cancer-free. The recovery has had it’s setbacks (a MRSA infection in my abdomen) but with some kick-butt … [Read more...]

Pink Ribbon

On March 14th, 2012, I was diagnosed with breast cancer of the right breast. I couldn’t believe it. I was in shock and disbelief for several weeks. All I wanted to do was cry and blame myself. I kept trying to think over and over of how I got this cancer.  My boyfriend, Troy, has been my biggest rock of all. When I finally got up the nerve to tell my family and friends, I was so happy about how loved and supported of me they were. My church and several other churches even had a prayer chain going for me. My Facebook family has also been there for me since day one. It was finally time to do something about this, no more testing, no more biopsies. I just wanted it attacked. April 26th  was my surgery. I had a double mastectomy. One month later chemo followed. This had changed my life because now I was really scared to get sick and catch something. I was so ready to fight this cancer and get on the road to recovery. Cheryl Witter Iowa Submitted 4-18-2012 The informational … [Read more...]

Michelle's Story (Cowdens Syndrome)

My entire life, I have had one surgery after the next. They were all spaced about 2-3 years apart and most of them were for different things. The most notable was when I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer at age 9. The other surgeries were mainly benign tumors with several surgeries being for fibroid tumors in both breasts. We never thought the situations were connected, just assumed that I had some bad luck and eventually I'd grow out of it. When I was 19 years old, I was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor. I spent two weeks in the hospital as they ran tests and eventually operated. My neurosurgeon studied my history and suggested I get genetic testing for Cowden's Syndrome which is a mutation of the tumor suppressor gene. I had the test run about 5 months later and it was confirmed. I had a genetic mutation which had been the root cause of all of my medical problems. Cowden's is a mutation of the P10 gene which is the tumor suppressor gene. Cowden's also carries a higher risk … [Read more...]
