"I Fight Like A Girl" Against Breast Cancer!

This is the true story of my aunt Magda Batista's battle against breast cancer. As a lupus patient I know how hard battling an illness can be. Magda inspires me to fight my battle with illness everyday with my head held high. Here's hoping her words inspire a fight within you... "Ms. Batista; you have breast cancer." After the shock, my first thoughts were, "Why me? I don't smoke or drink!" I had always figured that if I did the right thing, lived the right way that I would escape such horrors. I started to fear death, horrified that I would leave my son without a mother. However, all was not lost. My family, friends, and faith kept me going when I thought I didn't have the strength. I began to see life in a different shade of light, even though the doctors didn't tell me what I wanted to hear I began to change for the better. I started to feel good about myself, and learned one should never take life for granted. I discovered that people living with illness don't … [Read more...]

Stacy (Breast Cancer)

Hi my name is Stacy Scott and I am 38 years old and was diagnosed with stage 2 invasive ductal carcinoma breast cancer in December 2009. The margins were not clear so the vascular surgeon recommended chemotherapy first. I was doing a monthly exam and I felt a lump in my right breast about the size of a dime. I went to my OBGYN doctor and had my annual mammogram and told him about the bump I found in my breast and I also told him about the pain I had been having in my chest. He found suspicious areas in my right breast and sent me to a facility for more thorough diagnostic testing. Well the lab techs at the facility said "I don't see what the doctor is having such a fit about". They told me that it was just a benign cyst in my right breast and to come back in 6 months because they saw an area in … [Read more...]

Mammogram or MRI For Breast Cancer Detection

Mammography is the most widely used screening test for breast cancer; but in the last few years more interest has focused on using breast MRI for breast cancer screening – particularly for women at high risk for breast tumors. Why the enthusiasm about using breast MRI to screen for tumors of the breast? Breast MRI studies offer two main advantages over mammography. MRI doesn’t involve exposure to radiation, and it’s more sensitive – meaning it can pick up breast cancers that mammograms miss. Still, not all doctors are enthusiastic about using breast MRI as a screening test for breast cancer. MRI Breast Cancer Screening: Is Using Breast MRI to Diagnose Breast Cancer Better? Previous studies looking at MRI for breast cancer screening showed MRI to be very sensitive for picking up breast tumors, even ones that mammography missed. The problem lies with its specificity. Breast MRI’s often picks up breast changes that are not actually cancer. This can lead to unnecessary … [Read more...]
