Amy's Story (Liver Disease)

My life was never expected to be perfect because perfection does not exist. What was expected of me was for me to graduate high school making A or Bs, and go to college on a swimming or basketball scholarships. What I did not expect was to spending time during my high school years living in a bubble, accused of being crazy and at times being unable to walk. But these things were part of the journey that life had laid before me. When I was in the 8th grade I went on a church trip. I sang the gospel of Jesus and witnessed to complete strangers on the beach. I came back with a souvenir - blisters on my ankles. That summer, I spent multiple hours in and out of dermatologists’ offices trying to find the source of what exactly these little blisters that traveled up my body and turned into quarter inch deep ulcers the size of quarters were. They covered me head to toe including my scalp and breast. The blisters were quickly followed by fevers spiking up to 105 degrees for days. Blood … [Read more...]

Angela's Story (Liver Disease)

Swinging my feet back and forth off the end of the examining table—repeatedly drooping a sandal to the floor, I found my self lost in the framed print of a lavender field beside me on the wall. The sea of purple mesmerized me as I tried not to contemplate what news would greet me when the doctor came in. Moments later a white clad one opened the door, and she was smiling. Good news, I thought. But it was only her attempt at a bedside manner, her smile was a mask—a mask she thought would protect me (and herself) from the news she had to give me. “Angela, your blood work and radiological procedure results have come back and I am sorry to tell you that the situation is serious. You have Cirrhosis, a type related to NASH. NASH stands for Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis. As a secondary affect of that you also have diabetes and I will need to refer you to a Specialist in order to get you placed on the Liver Transplant List in Chapel Hill.” I sat stunned, trying to process all the … [Read more...]

Bobby's Story (Hepatitis C) LR

I am a 59-year-old man. I worked with women in the Hospital for many years. I would prefer to have a woman for me than against me. I contracted Hepatitis C back in 1972 starting an IV on a woman in Viet Nam. I got poked in the finger with a needle used on her. She died 2 weeks later of TB. The major populis of Viet Nam have Hep C. I went through the treatments of Pegulated inerfurion and Riboviron for 52 weeks. As long as I was on treatment my liver values remained low. I was considered to be a non-responder. I did this treatment 7 years ago. When I first started treatments I was told that I might feel like I had the Flu. That was it - nothing else. I did this alone other than God. I would be dead if not for him. I will be going back on treatments again for 18 months. This time I have help. I can survive through others like me. I found help through Fight like a Girl Club. I will be eternally grateful for Ricki Albertoni. She has given me new strength to endure this … [Read more...]

Laurie's Story (Hepatitis C)

December 1988, the Friday night after Christmas. I was excited about going out with my friends to Tully’s, the local Bar and Grill. I put on the beautiful Gold satin blouse along with my black pants my mom gave me for Christmas. I was sitting at a booth window which faced the parking lot of the restaurant and heard noises outside so I looked and there were 2 men beating terribly on another man all alone and others were standing there doing nothing. My friend Toni (she is a longtime school friend) and I went outside to try to help in some way and, as we went out the door, I remember telling the door man what we saw and that he may want to call the police. We went outside and yelled as we walked closer (nothing stops me when someone is in need of help). As we got closer we told the guys to stop and that the police were on their way and 2 went one way, the other guy in the opposite direction. Toni and I started to walk away. Not even 5 feet away, we heard them running … [Read more...]

Lindsay's Story 1 (Liver Disease)

My name is Lindsay and I am 29. My whole life I was a normal kid and teenager. I graduated high school and decided I wanted to go to cosmetology school in Santa Monica, CA to become a famous hair stylist/makeup artist, but things don't always go the way you plan. When I was 19 I started getting sick on a weekly basis. I would get a really bad cold, it would go away, and a week later, it would come back. I went to a doctor and she ran some blood tests and said I had hepatitis B from eating sushi. I called my parents back in Colorado and they put me on a plane and I came home. When I got home I went to a Gastroenterologist, had more blood work taken, a liver biopsy, and got the news, I had liver disease. They didn't know what kind so they immediately sent me over to the University of Colorado Hospital. I was immediately admitted and the doctors began to run a massive amount of tests to figure out what was going on. After a ERCP that gave me pancreatitis and a surgery to … [Read more...]
