Ali's Story (AIDS, Cerebral Palsy) LR

My name is Alexandria Denise Allen but my family and friends call me Ali or Alex. I am 16-years-old. I was born in Boston, MA, on May 1st, 1995 to my Puerto Rican mother from Brooklyn, New York named Annette Denise Moya and my Jamaican father from Kingston, Jamaica, Gladstone Allen. I was born prematurely. I was born with HIV/AIDS and Cerebral Palsy in my legs and a small hole in my heart. I have been fighting all my life ever since I was born. I was not supposed to walk for the rest of my life and I was not supposed to live after 5-years-old. But then, when my 5th birthday came up, I got really sick and I was laying on my death bed. I was laying there and saw all my family from Brooklyn, New York and Kingston, Jamaica all come down to Boston, Massachusetts to wish me goodbye. Seeing my family by my side, my mom asked for me to be baptized before I left. After getting baptized, I started to get better. I started to walk. When I hit 11-years-old, I got diagnosed with bi-polar … [Read more...]

Becca Heart Defect Story

Hi Everyone, This weekend I did what the average teenager does over the weekend. I went to a surprise 18th birthday party for a friend of mine, and then the next day I went shopping for a prom dress with my friends. While I enjoyed being able to enjoy the ”normal” teen life, there was an incident that happened that I’d like to share with you all. The conversation was going well and we were all laughing about some joke someone had said when a girl in the group - we will call her “Not-So-Sensitive-Girl” A.K.A. “NSSG” - asked me a personal question. “Becca do you wear push up bras?” asked the NSSG.  I thought this question was a bit awkward to be asking period, let alone at a party, with other people listening. Blushing, I responded with “I don’t really know. . . I guess I have one or two . . . why?” NSSG nodded a bit at my response; … [Read more...]

Gabriella's Story (Heart Disease)

My high school sweetheart and I married in February 2002 at the young ages of 20 and 19. We decided a year and a half later it was time to start a family. It took 9 months of trying before we successfully conceived our first baby. She was born Friday, January 14, 2005. Gabriella Joelle, a name so big for a 6 lb 2 oz teeny bundle of pink. For four years, Gabriella grew to be so vibrant and sweet and even became a big sister to her brother Paul Jr in September 2007. A girly-girl to the extreme, independent, strong-willed and sensitive. She went through all the typical cooties kids go through, but was overall healthy. I made sure she was always current on shots, ate healthy and made it to all her doctors appointments. We went to her 4 year check-up, expecting for everything to be as it always is…. 90th percentile for height, 20th for weight, excellent speech and development, required shots and "see ya again next year", but it wasn't the case this time. Our pediatrician … [Read more...]
