Rania's Story (Endometriosis) LR

My name is Rania. I will be 40 in January. When I was seven years old, I lived in Sturgeon, MO. There was a chemical spill on the RR tracks 3 blocks from my house. My mother was extremely young, raising me, my six yr old sister, and one yr old brother by herself. Turns out the chemical that was flowing freely was DIOXIN. At the time, and for years, I just thought ok, it happened. Right after I turned 13, almost to the day, I got my first period. About a year later, my step-father announced at the dinner table (after I had stayed home sick that day) that he didn’t care - my sister or I (who is only 20 months younger than me) were not allowed to stay home for "female problems" because it was just an excuse! Also, by the time we started our periods, my mother had already had a hysterectomy because when she went to have her tubes tied when she was 26 yrs old, they found abnormal cells, so they did a complete hysterectomy just in case. So, although my mother and I were very close, … [Read more...]

Kate's Endometriosis Story

My story begins in my kitchen while making dinner for my family. I was 30 years old. I was standing at the counter talking with my son and preparing for dinner, when I had a sudden sharp stabbing pain in my left side and lower back. This pain caused me to become lightheaded and I thought I was going to faint. Almost mid sentence I stopped and started to sit on the floor of my kitchen trying not to faint. My son was there and watching this strange behavior and I did not want to scare him, so with all my strength I got up and headed to the bathroom for privacy. As I lay on the bathroom floor, eyes closed, pain worsening, I suddenly felt that strong urge to, well, let’s just say, use the bathroom. I got up and tried to go, but felt even more lightheaded and had to stop. By this time my son had gotten my husband and they were both at the door worried and wondering what was wrong. Now, I have a history of fainting with pain, so I squeaked out an “I’m fine, be out in a minute” and … [Read more...]

Amy's Endometriosis Story

Hello, my name is Amy. I have been battling endometriosis for about 10 years now. I had my first surgery when I was 20. I'm 29 now. I had it pretty bad - stage 4. I was treated with controlled periods with birth control until last May. My husband and I wanted to try for a baby. Almost a year and a half later, I still haven't conceived. I had an HSG done about 1 1/2 weeks ago and the results weren't promising. I have one fallopian tube that's scarred shut and the other side is only slightly open. I have now been turned over to a fertility clinic, which I haven't contacted yet. I'm still dealing with the sadness and depression surrounding the slim chance of conceiving naturally. I wanted to get my story and feelings out in some way and, since I've never tried before, I thought it would help to share with an audience that felt my pain and maybe could relate. I know there are a lot of endo sufferers that share my same predicament. So IVF is the probable next step for us. Don't see … [Read more...]

Brittaney's Story (Endometriosis) LR

After five years of knowing that the pain I feel nearly everyday is not normal, I have found a doctor who agrees with me. I have endometriosis and my mom also has endo. Unfortunately for her, she wasn't diagnosed until after she had my youngest brother. She had a hysterectomy and as far as I know she is doing fine. I am 21 years old and have been married for two years. My husband and I have been trying, unsuccessfully, for a baby and we may have to look to IVF. The doctor says to give it another three or four months of trying and if that doesn't work then we will start the fertility treatments. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for fertility! :) Brittaney Texas Submitted 9-22-11 The informational content of this article is intended to convey a personal experience and, because every person’s experience is unique, should not be relied upon as a substitute for professional healthcare advice. … [Read more...]

Rachel's Story 2 (Endometriosis)

I fight Endometriosis. I started my period when I was 10 and had very heavy, painful ones for a long time but never really thought much about it. My mom had always had the same problem so I just assumed it was normal. At age 12, I started having horrible stomach pain to the point I could be walking and suddenly drop to my knees. My mom took me to my pediatrician and she couldn’t find anything so I went on ignoring it till after a few months it went away. When I was 16 I started having the pains once again. At this point I was finishing up my senior year of high school, my mom had just been through a thyroid storm that had lasted over a year nearly killing her and she was still recovering. For several months I ignored it and played it down to my family. At first it was something I felt I could handle. I figured I would just ignore it and it would go away. It didn’t and swiftly got worse. It got to the point that it would hit me so hard I would be down on my knees. My mom took me … [Read more...]

Gina's Fight Like a Girl Story (Endometriosis)

To all my friends and supporters in my fight for survival, As you know, we have one heck of a fight ahead to get people closer to awareness and  possibly even benefits. It has been a longtime dream of mine to leave behind a legacy for those who truly love me, would be proud of me and would remember that I did all I could with what little I had left. With the help of friends and strangers to fight this battle. So that long after I am gone girls will have a chance at a life they dream of, whatever that may be.  A foundation that educates and gives hope and understanding for a disease that can cause you to lose yourself completely, dreams and all. Before I begin this, those of you who know me know I love the outdoors and was a runner when I lived in Florida. I would ride a mountain bike almost 30 miles a day. Work, camp, hike, climb mountains, outlast most of the men in my life and was up for anything active. I was a lot of fun, with plenty of stamina, swim team in school, danced … [Read more...]

Cheryl's Fight Like a Girl Story (Endometriosis)

I remember my Mom telling me how lucky "we" were that we didn't get painful periods. Heavy, yes. Painful, no. Well, at least according to her. And for some reason I can't pinpoint, this made me unwilling to speak up and say that I DID have pain. In the early womanhood years, the pain was bearable. The heavy flow (had to get up every two hours the first couple nights to change) was a tougher battle. But, over time and bit-by-bit, the pain came. At first, it was pretty minor but it steadily got worse. In college, I'd occasionally lie down to escape it. By grad school, I'd curl up to cry and lose a few days of studying. Within a year after finishing school (24 yo), it was at the "just hope to die" level. I still didn't speak up. I don't know why. I'd never been healthy. Two prior ENT surgeries, hives from nowhere, migraines…I was used to docs and talking but there was a block here. I went on the Pill for the heavy flow (and, well, the birth control side) and STILL didn't speak up … [Read more...]

Renee's Fight Like a Girl Story (Endometriosis)

I was one of the lucky girls that got my period before I was even done with grade school and, right off the bat, my experience with it was awful. Unfortunately, I did not have a great support system to lean on. When approaching my Mom about the horrendous cramping and over abundant bleeding (to me it was a very "Carrie-esque" type of experience) she told me that it is what every girl goes thru and that I would learn to adapt. So month after month and year after year, I just convinced myself that this was normal. The phrase "This, too, shall pass" became my mantra to get thru the nightmare that called itself PMS. I had even considered having those words tattooed on me, literally. It seemed to be as I got older instead of adapting, it got worse. So then began the emotional terror of it all. I often wondered what was so wrong with me that I struggled to deal with this while all the girls around me seemed to be fine. I began wearing tampons that very summer of my first period. While … [Read more...]

Yellow Ribbon Endometriosis

My story began only 5 months ago. I was admitted with pain on my left side at our local ED and soon they got me in an ambulance on the way to the bigger hospital where I was diagnosed with appendicitis. So as usual with that type of thing I went in and had it taken out. But when I woke up in recovery, I can still remember those words that the surgeon told me "You have endometriosis and you might be infertile." My world came crushing down. I have never heard of this disease, how I can I have it and never have known about it. But after the surgery the nurses came by and explained to me what it is and what needs to be done. They didn't tell me how bad it was or anything like that. They just said you need to see a gynecologist fast. So they made an appointment for me at the local clinic. Took 3 months to get seen and the pain on my left side continued even after they took out my appendix and I was admitted to ED more then twice because of the pain and was drugged up with pain killers … [Read more...]

LaQuanda's Story (Endometriosis)

Greetings ladies. I am LaQuanda Hart. I am a 29-year-old female from Springfield, SC. I was diagnosed with endometriosis well over 15 years ago. I have tirelessly gone through 9 different procedures due to this rare disease. Believe it or not, after all the procedures and surgeries I have had, the pain is STILL here. I dealt with the excruciating pain for so long that I was at the point of throwing in the towel. It felt like I wasn't living a normal life as most young ladies do. When I was in High School I spent a week and 2 days out of school a month because of the excruciating pain that I was experiencing. I was at the hospital the entire time getting morphine or dilaudid injections to try and suppress the pain. In my 15 years of dealing with this I have had recurring cancer cells and a hemorrhagic ovary that bled out into my stomach area. Just recently my urologist told me that the endometriosis had spread to my bladder. I am now suffering back issues that endometriosis may have … [Read more...]
