The Fight Like a Girl Club is happy to announce the Winners of the Fight Like a Girl Club Tattoos for a Cause Photo Contest 2011. The Contest which ended at midnight EST on Monday, September 12, drew 158 entries ranging from beautiful butterflies to picturesque art to loving tributes to stunning awareness ribbons.  Fight Like a Girl Club Founder, Sandy Ellis, says "I couldn't be happier with our very first photo contest. I think our members and fans enjoyed reading the stories and meanings behind the tattoos as much as they enjoyed viewing the tattoos. While we could only have 3 "Winners" every single entrant is a winner as far as we're concerned!" Hate Needles?

emla

emla is something I only heard about fairly recently, but I so wish I knew about it when I was going through chemo and having to have lots of needles. emla is a cream that is a local anaesthetic that has been successfully used in UK for 25 years. The cream is available in a ‘all-in-one’ pack from your local pharmacy to help numb the pain of the needle during child vaccinations, minor skin procedures, blood donation and travel vaccinations, and in my case: chemo. Luckily, we never had a problem taking our little one for his injections. He just tended to sit there and watch while the nurse jabbed him. In fact, it was only his 8 week injections that he cried for. He’s hard, obviously, and much braver than me! While I’ve always been OK with having blood tests done, having a needle in your forearm for chemo is totally different, and towards the end of my treatments, it became quite painful. It’s not that I’m scared of needles, it’s just that the pain wasn’t very … [Read more...]

People Who Play Sick Online

Munchausen by Internet is a term coined by psychiatry professor Dr. Marc Feldman to describe the online manifestation of the mental disorder called Munchausen Syndrome, i.e., people who fake their own illness. People with Munchausen by Internet join online social groups and pretend to be ill because they crave the attention, care, and sympathy that sick people get. They do it to get attention and lenience, act out anger and jealousy, and/or control others. This type of behavior is on the rise online, so it's helpful to learn how to recognize it and how to react when you do encounter it. How to Identify a Faker Online If you spend any significant amount of time socializing online, you've probably come across at least a few people who claim to be seriously ill. Your online friend's plight might tug at your heartstrings, but how can you tell when someone is legitimately in trouble and when he/she is just faking? According to Dr. Feldman's research, there are ten common clues to … [Read more...]

Parade Thanksgiving Macys Cropped

For almost a century, it has been as much a holiday tradition as turkey with all the trimmings, braving the stores early for bargains on 'Black Friday' and visiting grandmother's house. From its modest beginnings in 1924, the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade has become one of the most popular and anticipated annual holiday events. Everybody loves a parade, as they say and the Macy's parade brings out all that is good about being American, as well as unofficially heralding the beginning of the holiday season - in fact the parade was originally known as the Christmas Parade. During the early 1920s, a large number of employees at Macy's, as well as other large department stores, were immigrants from Europe. Although proud to be considered Americans, many of the employees also wanted to recognize their own heritage with the type of festival or parade they were used to in their homeland. To celebrate this most American of holidays, in 1924, some of the employees organized a march through … [Read more...]
